What's the Point?

What's the point???

I know we've all asked this question before.

For example, you know you need to go to your weekly Bible study... but why? No one talks to you anyway. What's the point?

Your Bible has been sitting on your nightstand for a couple of weeks collecting dust. You know you should open it up and read it. But it seems that every time you try to read, you can't understand a word you read anyway. So, what's the point?

There's been a few people at church trying to get you involved in some local ministries, but you know that it's going to take away a couple of your free evenings during the week. I mean, it's not like you have a heart for this ministry anyway. What's the point?

Just a few scenarios that I can relate to, I don't know about you. But I have an answer to all three of them...

There is no point.

There is no point in doing all the "Christian" stuff, if your heart isn't in it. They're all great, don't get me wrong, but if you're doing them because you want to check off a box or make yourself feel better.. stop.

Here's a little snippet from my journal entry this morning, "I really want to be more diligent, not only in my [Bible] readings, but in my walk. I can get so caught up in the readings, but if I'm not showing love [to others], how is it helping me?"

This reminded me of something similar Paul wrote to the church in Corinth.

"If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing." (1 Corinthians 13:2)

Paul isn't saying that having faith or the gift of prophecy are bad things, but, instead, that those things, without love, mean nothing.

Personally, I know I can get caught up in making sure I'm doing all the right things (e.g. reading my Bible, showing up for church, making sure I'm nice to people, etc.), but if in the next instant I'm irritated and upset because the person sitting next to me in the waiting room is talking much louder than I would like, something is wrong.

Do you see the unbalance here?

Everything that I do, from reading Scripture, participating in Bible studies, praying, growing my faith, they are all absolutely worthless if I am not loving the people around me. Christ showed us how to love through His example. While He did grow himself spiritually in prayer and talking with His disciples, He also poured out His love for others.

So, what's the point???

I don't want to forget who I'm living for. I'm living for a God who loves all people, including me. It's time to take an active role as a living example of a loving God, and pour out His love to others. Because, let's face it, we all need what we can't have... perfect love.

That's the point.
